What is MV-912 and when do you need it?

MV-912 is the Vehicle Bill of Sale issued by the New York State DMV. In a private sale it is the document that proves what changed hands, for how much, and when. New York asks for a bill of sale as part of the buyer's registration/title paperwork, and the seller should keep a copy as proof that the vehicle — and the liability that comes with it — left their hands on the sale date.

The form is short: seller, buyer, price ("consideration"), vehicle description with the VIN, optional terms and conditions, and dated signatures for both parties. Our generator fills every field from your answers — including an as-is clause in the Terms & Conditions box, the protection most private sellers forget to write in.

Selling a vehicle in New York — the paperwork in order

  1. Fill and sign MV-912. Use the generator above; both parties sign. No notary needed.
  2. Sign the title over. Complete the transfer section on the back of the NY title (including the odometer disclosure for model year 2011+ vehicles).
  3. Seller: remove the plates. In New York, plates stay with the seller — return them to the DMV or transfer them to your next vehicle, then cancel the insurance.
  4. Buyer: register within the deadline. The buyer takes the title, MV-912 and proof of insurance to the DMV to register and pay sales tax (form DTF-802).

MV-912 — FAQ

What is form MV-912?
The New York DMV's official Vehicle Bill of Sale — the standard record of a private-party vehicle or boat sale, used by the buyer for registration and by the seller as proof of transfer.
Is MV-912 mandatory?
A bill of sale is part of New York's required transfer paperwork for private sales. A self-written document with the same information is generally accepted, but the official form sails through the DMV counter with no questions.
Does it need to be notarized?
No — signatures of both parties are sufficient in New York.
Is this the real official form?
Yes — we fill the actual MV-912 (11/21) PDF, a public-record government form. Compare it with the copy on dmv.ny.gov anytime, or download our blank copy to fill by hand.
Does it work for boats?
Yes — the form's identification field accepts a Hull Identification Number (HIN). Select "Boat / Vessel" in the generator. Trailers sold with a boat should get their own bill of sale — use our trailer generator.
