Selling a trailer in Virginia: what to know
Virginia requires every trailer, regardless of weight or use, to be titled and registered with the DMV. Even the smallest garden-variety utility trailer gets a Virginia title. Registration can be annual, bi-annual or permanent, and trailers at 4,000 lbs or less qualify for the permanent trailer tag: one fee, no renewals.
A private sale therefore always includes the signed-over title plus the bill of sale for the price record. Trailers over 3,000 lbs GVWR also face Virginia’s safety inspection, so buyers of heavier trailers should factor that into the first week of ownership.
